those bilk the Mario Kart blue
shell but fall victim to joycon

drift one of those okay wait
a second forgot to articulate
kind of days one of those
you could've sworn perfect

haircuts until coming home
crying at sunset wind chimes
recite secrets the car smells
like cardamom you call mom

Hello? I am such cursed crap
comfort me if you can be kind
cool down quit coffee I can't
even kind of kind of days

This poem was published in Issue 29 of New Ohio Review in 2021. Rarely do I admit such things, but this poem remains one of my personal favorites. Probably because it sounds exactly like me and how my brain works. No joke: the driving force* behind this poem was wanting to write a poem that not only uses the word combination "joycon drift" in it, but uses "joycon drift" the concept to inform the actual structure of the poem, hence the repetition and lack of punctuation causing phrases to smash into each other. *intentional pun for all you pun lovers, so I guess I lied when I said "no joke."
